Is traffic insurance (trafik sigortası) compulsory in Turkey?
Yes. Third-party traffic insurance is mandatory for all Turkish-registered vehicles. Driving without it is illegal and carries heavy fines. Your vehicle can also be impounded at police checkpoints.
What does traffic insurance cover?
Turkish traffic insurance (trafik sigortası) covers third-party liability — bodily injury and property damage you cause to others. It does not cover damage to your own vehicle. For that, you need kasko (casco) cover.
How is traffic insurance different from kasko?
Traffic insurance is the legally required minimum — it only covers damage you cause to others. Kasko is optional comprehensive cover that also protects your own vehicle against accident, theft, fire and natural disaster.
Can I get traffic insurance as a foreigner?
Yes. Residency or citizenship is not required to insure a Turkish-plate vehicle. You will need the vehicle registration document (ruhsat) and your passport.
How long does it take to get traffic insurance?
