If you’ve driven your foreign-plate car into Turkey — or you’re planning to — insurance is one of the first things you need to sort out. Driving without it is illegal and can result in your vehicle being impounded.
Do I need insurance for a foreign-plate car in Turkey?
Yes. Any vehicle with a foreign plate driven in Turkey must have either:
- A valid Turkish motor insurance policy specifically covering foreign plates, or
- An internationally recognised Green Card (Carte Verte) valid in Turkey
A standard UK or EU policy may not cover you in Turkey beyond the minimum legal requirements. You need a policy that explicitly covers Turkey.
What is a Green Card?
The Green Card (officially the International Motor Insurance Certificate) is an internationally recognised document proving you have at least the minimum required third-party liability insurance. It’s issued alongside your policy and is required for border crossings.
All foreign plate insurance policies we issue include a Green Card at no extra charge.
How long can I keep my foreign-plate car in Turkey?
Under Turkish customs rules, a foreign-plate vehicle may remain in Turkey for up to 24 months. After that:
- It must be exported, or
- You must apply for a customs duty payment/extension, or
- You can have the vehicle exempted under certain residency conditions
Our team can advise on your specific situation and timeline.
Which plates do you cover?
We cover all nationalities, including:
- 🇬🇧 UK (post-Brexit)

What documents do I need?
- Vehicle registration document (V5C for UK, equivalent for other countries)
- Your passport
- Turkish residence permit (if you have one)
That’s it. We handle the rest.
How quickly can I get covered?
Most foreign plate policies are issued within a few hours of receiving your documents. In urgent cases — for example if you’re at the border — we can often issue same-day.
How much does foreign plate insurance cost?
Premiums vary based on:
- Vehicle make, model and year
- Engine size
- Duration of cover (policies can be issued for 1–12 months)
- Plate nationality

What happens if I drive without insurance?
In Turkey, driving without valid insurance:
- Is a criminal offence carrying heavy fines
- Can result in your vehicle being impounded by police
- May result in personal liability for any accidents you cause, without insurance backing
Don’t risk it. Cover is affordable and fast to arrange.
