Turkey has become one of Europe’s most popular destinations for digital nomads and remote workers. The combination of affordable living costs, great weather, fast internet in major cities, and a straightforward entry process makes it a compelling base.
But insurance is one area where many digital nomads get caught out. Here’s what you need.
Do digital nomads need insurance in Turkey?
Yes — in several forms:
If you’re applying for a residence permit (including the Digital Nomad Visa): Health insurance is mandatory. You need a Turkish-issued health insurance policy covering the full permit duration.
If you drove your car to Turkey: You need foreign plate insurance. Your home country policy almost certainly doesn’t cover Turkey adequately.
If you own property in Turkey: DASK earthquake insurance is compulsory.
Everything else below is optional but recommended.
The Digital Nomad Visa and insurance
Turkey introduced a Digital Nomad Visa (officially a “Freelancer/Digital Nomad Short-Stay Permit”) allowing remote workers to stay legally for 1 year. Requirements include proof of income ($3,000/month equivalent) and valid health insurance.
For this visa, you need full foreign health insurance from a SEDDK-regulated Turkish insurer — not international health insurance from abroad.
Equipment insurance for digital nomads
Your laptop, camera and equipment are your livelihood. Options in Turkey:
- Some home contents policies can cover portable equipment outside the home
- Business insurance with equipment cover is available for registered freelancers
- Note: standard tourist/renter insurance may not cover work equipment
If your gear is worth over ₺50,000, dedicated equipment cover is worth exploring.
Health insurance: what digital nomads need to know
On tourist visa entry (up to 90 days): No Turkish health policy is required, but you should carry private travel health insurance. State hospitals will treat you in an emergency but billing can be complicated.
On residence permit: Full Turkish health insurance is compulsory. Cost: ₺3,000–₺15,000/year depending on age. Our team can have this issued same-day.
If you have significant existing health needs: Consider the level of cover carefully. Basic permit-compliant policies may have limited out-patient cover. We can help you select a plan that actually covers your healthcare needs.
Liability insurance for remote workers
If you’re a consultant or contractor, consider professional indemnity insurance. This covers you if a client claims financial loss due to your professional advice or work. Available for Turkey-based freelancers and registered companies.
Emergency assistance and repatriation
If you’re a long-term nomad with no fixed base, make sure any policy you hold includes medical repatriation — the ability to be transported to your home country or a country of choice for treatment. Standard Turkish health insurance policies don’t always include this.
