Turkey takes uninsured driving seriously. The consequences range from financial penalties to vehicle impoundment — and if you cause an accident without insurance, you face unlimited personal liability.
For Turkish-plate vehicles: driving without trafik sigortası
Traffic insurance (trafik sigortası) is compulsory for all Turkish-registered vehicles. If you’re caught without it:
Financial penalties: The fine for driving without trafik sigortası is set annually. In 2026, the administrative fine is approximately ₺10,000–₺15,000 for passenger vehicles. This is updated by regulation each January.
Vehicle registration: You cannot renew your vehicle’s annual inspection (muayene) without proof of valid insurance. An overdue muayene is a separate offence carrying additional fines.
At police checkpoints: Turkish police conduct regular insurance checks, particularly at major highways and city boundaries. Uninsured vehicles can be impounded on the spot.
In an accident: If you cause an accident without insurance, you are personally liable for all damage and injury costs — medical bills, vehicle repairs, property damage. This can run to hundreds of thousands of lira.
For foreign-plate vehicles: driving without foreign plate insurance
If your foreign-plate car doesn’t have valid insurance for Turkey:
- Police can impound your vehicle at any checkpoint
- You face a fine under Turkish traffic laws
- You may be required to arrange insurance before the vehicle is released
- You are personally liable for any accident damage
Note: A standard UK or EU policy often doesn’t cover Turkey beyond the minimum EU requirement, which doesn’t apply to non-EU Turkey.
What if I just arrived in Turkey today?
If you’ve just crossed the border and don’t have cover, you can often purchase short-term border insurance at the crossing. However, border insurance is expensive, often of limited coverage quality, and issued in Turkish only.
A better approach is to arrange your foreign plate policy with us before you travel. It takes a few hours and costs significantly less than border insurance for the same period.
What happens after an accident without insurance?
If you cause an accident in Turkey and are uninsured:
- Police will attend and document the accident
- You are personally responsible for all costs to the other party
- The injured party can take you to civil court for compensation
- Your vehicle may be held pending resolution
Insurance is genuinely not worth skipping in Turkey. Premiums are modest; the risk isn’t.
